Covers 222,000 acres in northern Wisconsin including 900 lakes and 18 family campgrounds. A total of 244 bird species frequent the forest - that's 73% of all species recorded in Wisconsin. Nesting pairs of bald eagles, osprey and loons are common. In addition, birders have a good chance of seeing the Alder Flycatcher, Vesper Sparrow and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Rare sightings include the Gray Jay, Nelson’s Sharptailed Sparrow and LeConte’s Sparrow.
The forest also offers a diverse array of recreational opportunities, such as camping, canoeing, hiking, snowmobiling, biking and hunting, as well as the chance to simply sit quietly and enjoy its natural beauty. In addition, the forest cleans our air and water, provides habitat for a wide range of plant and animal species, and helps us sustain our quality of life. Most of the campsites are isolated from development but if you are seeking a more Wilderness type experience a few places to try would be the Sylvania Wilderness Area or the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
