Located 7 miles south of Shawano, this wetland area was once part of a glacial lake bed formed 12,000 years ago. Birds include a resident population of sandhill cranes, black terns, American bitterns, Blanding’s turtle, ruffed grouse, pheasants, several species of wood peckers, wood ducks, mallards and yellow- headed blackbirds. McDonald Road offers access to the area's interior. The wildlife area is comprised of sandy uplands and ridges with marshy depressions. Open fields, swamp conifer, lowland scrub, bog, bottomland hardwoods, pine plantations, and aspen/oak forest make up the habitat types. Deer, turkey, Sandhill cranes, Canada geese, mallards, wood ducks, and muskrats are commonly seen around the wildlife area and nature center. There are hiking, snowshoe and groomed ski trails here.
