This state-owned 27,000-acre complex of marsh, woodlands and prairies is located in Burnett County north of Grantsburg. Crex Meadows features colonies of nesting herons, breeding eagles and osprey, sharp-tailed grouse and trumpeter swans as well as large concentrations of sandhill cranes, waterfowl and eagles in the fall. It is home to 270 species of birds and 600 species of plants.
More than 260 species of birds call the meadows home -- colonies of nesting herons, breeding eagles and osprey, sharp-tailed grouse and trumpeter swans, plus large concentrations of sandhill cranes, waterfowl and eagles in the fall. An extensive road system, including eighteen miles of dike roads, offers excellent access and great vantage points for wildlife viewing. A wide variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects also reside here. Originally part of the Northern Wisconsin Pine Barrens, it is now the state's largest remaining portion of this globally endangered ecosystem. Check out the bird houses at the beginning of the walkway for nesting bluebirds and flickers.
