Bird species include northern harrier hawks, turkey vultures and sandhill cranes. Because wild lupine grows in the area, this is a good potential habitat for the Karner blue butterfly. Bluebirds, yellow warblers and other songbirds also flourish in the barrens.
In addition, many birders reported a strong eagle flight including a number of migrant golden eagles that spent the winter in the upper Midwest. Song sparrows are now backing on territory in southern Wisconsin along with killdeer, robins, red-winged blackbirds, grackles and the other permanent residents. Geese are moving through in large numbers. Call the Nature Conservancy for more information.
