1,600 acres of Wisconsin DNR land along the Sugar River near the town of Avon (between Beloit and Janesville in south-central Wisconsin). The site is primitive, but has a wide range of habitats including prairie, swamp and oak savannah. Avon Bottoms features a lowland hardwood forest in the floodplain of the meandering Sugar River.
The Avon Bottoms State Wildlife Area includes bottomland hardwoods, oak woodlots, grassland, river, and marsh habitat. It provides habitat for pheasants, turkeys, rabbits, deer, and waterfowl. The area is open to the public for bird watching, canoeing, fishing, and hunting. The state owns approximately 2,000 acres within the Wildlife Area.
Large silver maples, swamp white oaks, and green ash dominate the diverse canopy of this wet-mesic forest. There are a number of oxbows – temporary pond areas made by the cut-off of old stream meanders – along with running sloughs and potholes, which all harbor unusual reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. Bird life is diverse with blue-gray gnatcatchers, tufted titmice, blue and green winged teal, and wood ducks.
