The ferry service to Washington Island leaves from Northport on the tip of the peninsula and goes to Detroit Harbor. The ferry started in 1946 with two wooden ferries and slowly grew until today is carries over 200,000 passengers and 70,000 vehicles (and more and more motorcycles). This part of Wisconsin is heavily Scandinavian, particularly Icelandic, and their flags line Detroit Harbor. There are five ferry boats that make up the Washington Island Ferry fleet, including one ice cutting boat.
When you reach the end of Highway 42 you'll find Northport Pier, and the Washington Island Ferry Line. After vehicles and passengers are safely on board we shove off for a 30-minute ride past nearby Plum, Pilot and Detroit Islands. This area is filled with history. You will be making the same passage as the Native Americans who paddled their canoes from island to island, French explorers who came to the area, and schooners that traveled the area a century ago. People come to Washington Island to get away from the tension of urban life, to travel “North of the Tension Line” and enjoy a slower, relaxing pace of life. The Island is well known for its tranquility, and the gentle sounds of waves lapping on the shores soothe those who come from the noise and bustle of mainland life. Northern Lights dance on the dark evening sky, with the Milky Way being very visible on most nights. Separated from the mainland peninsula by “Death’s Door,” the Island is accessible by the Washington Island Ferry Line’s car and passenger ferries, by the Island Clipper passenger ferry, by plane, or by private craft.
