Canoeing at Menominee River

A boundary river separating Wisconsin and Michigan. The upper stretch offers fast water and difficult rapids. Many rapids and dams must be portaged. Portions of the upper river are extremely dangerous and should only be run by experts in decked boats. The lower river has a slower current with some low-hazard rapids.

The Menominee is not generally considered a good paddling river. It does have a couple of short stretches that are highly popular with highly skilled whitewater paddlers. Menominee-Niagra to Piers Gorge Landing-3.2 miles. This is a short whitewater run on a big and powerful river. This is for advanced and expert paddlers only. The area provides opportunities to view waterfalls and birds, canoe, hunt, fish, and hike. Several one-night undeveloped camping sites are available along the river.
Florence County is home the the Pine, Popple, Brule and Menominee Rivers. A comprehensive canoe trail map of the Menominee River (including this property) and upstream tributaries such as the Brule, Paint and Michigamme Rivers was produced in 2003 by We Energies. Facilities and Opportunities:
- Camping – many primitive campgrounds along river, on or near impoundments. All have pit toilets, several with drinking water. $8 per site for overnight camping.
- Boat Ramp – many along the river corridor open to the public.
- Fishing – good to excellent fishing in the rivers and impoundments.
- Hunting – Publicly-owned forest land and the majority of corporate lands along the river corridor are open to hunting.
- Menominee River Park (65 Acres) provides a beautiful view of the Menominee River, a picnic area that includes a small open-sided shelter, fishing, and a boat landing.
