Can be canoed its entire length. The northernmost section above Chute Pond (south of Mountain) features 15 rated rapids. Water levels must be medium high or above and should be checked locally. Because of difficult whitewater and obstacles, this section should not be attempted by a novice. The river below Chute Pond continues moderately to its mouth on Green Bay. Novice canoers should avoid this river at all times: the only time there is enough water to run it, the current is going to be extremely fast. In addition, both the lower and upper stretches are prone to downed trees. These hidden hazards will turn up around blind curves, along the banks, and even completely blocking the river. Anyone who is unfamiliar with the backcountry should not attempt the trip.
Breakwater Park is a one-acre park located at the mouth of the Oconto River. Offering a pavilion, great fishing areas, boat-launching and boat slip rentals, this is a park you don’t want to miss! Take a drive out to the end of the jetty and take in the view of the beautiful bay you’ll be sure to come back. To rent a boat slip, please contact the Park & Recreation Department at 920.834.7706
The flowage and channel of the Oconto River allow swimming, boating, canoeing, fishing, and water-skiing.
