Managed with a wilderness philosophy, the park's 2,440 acres of forests and 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline offer quiet alternatives to bustling Door County.


Newport is Wisconsin's only wilderness-designated state park. The scenic shoreline is punctuated with sandy expanses, rocky juts, and elusive coves. Hiking, swimming, backpack camping, bird watching, swimming, whitewater paddling, fishing, camping, picnic spot, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are favorite activities. Anglers enjoy fair shoreline catches of salmon and trout. Boat ramps are available outside the park nearby Ellison Bay where are full-service marina resides. Ice fishing is pursued on Europe Lake.

There are evergreen and hardwood forests, wetlands, and upland meadows. The park has an interpretive center and naturalist program. Gislason Beach is near Newport State Park if you're in a beach type of mood, and Newport State Park is not far at all from Ellison Bay. Wildlife abounds, with over 175 species of birds, deer, porcupines, raccoons, squirrels, foxes, and coyotes roaming the area.

Newport offers 38.3 miles of trails, all of them open for hiking. Of these, 16.8 miles also are open to off-road bicycles. In the winter, 26.3 miles of trails are available for cross-country skiing, including, 12.5 miles groomed and tracked for classical skiing and 2 miles groomed for skate skiing, and 4.5 miles are open for snowshoeing.
