Northern Highland-American Legion (NHAL) State Forest

225,000 acres in Vilas, Oneida and Iron counties of beautiful northern Wisconsin forests and lakes offer camping, fishing, swimming, hunting, boating, canoeing, backpacking, biking, horseback riding, hunting and winter recreation such as cross-country ski, snowshoe and snowmobile on miles and miles of wooded trails, camping, birding.

It has an elevation of 506 meters, or 1,660 feet. Wild and wilderness areas are avail-able for those seeking solitude. Nesting pairs of bald eagles, osprey and loons are common. It is home to one of the largest Bald Eagle nesting concentrations in the world.
Vilas County is located in the Northern Highland region of Wisconsin. The majority of this land is included in the Northern Highlands-American Legion State Forest (NHAL). Due to its large size the forest has been split into two areas: Crystal Lake Area and Clear Lake Area for reservation purposes. Clear Lake Family Campground offers a water ski area, a public beach, and one boat launch in the campground where a state park sticker is required. The lakes brim with trophy fish, the woods abound with wildlife, and all manner of trails cross the forest for year-round northwoods adventures.
Boulder Lake just west of Boulder Junction has an accessible, barrier free campsite plenty of woods to go biking, beautiful bogs, wonderful wildlife. a perfect place to make memories. Flambeau and Manitowish River - a great place to experience the Wisconsin outdoors at this NH-AL State Forest. There is a small boarding dock and crushed granite pathways which lead to a tent pad, picnic table, fire ring and latrine which are all wheel chair accessible.
This is the largest state property in Wisconsin and also receives the most visitors. Over two million people come to this state forest each year to enjoy a wide array of recreational activities. There are over 900 lakes that lie within the forest boundary. In addition to recreational activities the state forest also hosts a number of research programs. The forest is a state-managed timber resource providing opportunities for commercial logging, individual firewood collection, and individual Christmas tree harvesting.
