Brunet Island State Park

Brunet Island State Park, Cornell, WI

Framed by the Chippewa and Fisher rivers, this park is located one mile northwest of Cornell. The park is noted for its numerous white-tailed deer and large eastern hemlock trees.

The Old Abe State Trail begins in the park and follows the riverbank south to the town of Chippewa Falls, with access to Lake Wissota State Park. Swimming, canoeing, camping, boating, hiking, picnicing, shoreline fishing and in winter skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing opportunities abound.

Enjoy the abundant plant and wildlife. Cross-country ski trails are available for winter sports. Connects to the Old Abe State Trail and the Ice Age National Scenic Trail.

Hiking is a popular thing to do around Brunet Island State Park; Deer Fly Trail is a great local trail; soar down the rapids of Eau Claire River in a kayak, paddling on Chippewa River & Duncan Creek and fabulous wildlife watching await. White-tailed deer numbers are abundant. Fox, ruffed grouse, beaver, great blue heron, and several river otters share the scenic parkland.

Over seven miles of hiking trails course across Brunet Island and the adjoining mainland. Old-growth hemlock trees tower over the Jean Brunet Nature Trail and along parts of the Timber Trail. Moonridge Trail, Old Abe State Trail, Hay Meadow Trail, The Hickory Ridge Trail, O'Neil Creek Flowage Trail, 1,000-mile Ice Age Trail and the Moraine Ice Age Interpretive Center are most popular. Open sky tables, a baseball field, playground, large stone fireplace ring, and restrooms round out the day use facilities.
