A river for variety and fun for canoeing, kayaking and tubing. Flows from Presque Isle in Vilas County, through Boulder Junction and Manitowish Waters, to the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage in Iron County.


The upper portion connects 25 lakes including the famous Manitowish Chain of Lakes. With numerous access points and boat landings, and more than fifty campsites, paddlers can design trips of any length. Downstream the lower portion is steady current flowing through beautiful north country into the flowage. Great opportunities for wildlife viewing, especially eagles. The Manitowish River flows 44 miles from High Lake in Boulder Junction to the Flambeau Flowage with 3 portages, several canoe-in overnight campsites, and breathtaking scenic beauty along the way. The river is slow-flowing, perfect for canoeing and kayaking. The Manitowish River is the perfect river for quietwater canoeists who like to combine lake and river paddling.

The newly-designated Manitowish River Wilderness Area lies to the east of the river's edge and Hwy. 47. This is a great area to see waterfowl!
