Merrick State Park

Merrick State Park

Located between stately 500-foot bluffs and the lazy beautiful backwaters of the Mississippi River north of Fountain City. The park is bordered by the lands and waters of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge.

River waters are a haven for summer and winter anglers. Nature lovers find endless enjoyment paddling, wildlife watching and hunting. The park offers camping, a nature center, scenic vistas, boating, fishing, canoeing, 3 hiking trails and 2 cross-country ski trails to choose from. River waters offer great fishing for summer and winter anglers.

The marshy back waters are home for egrets, herons, muskrats and otters. There are 2.5 miles of manicured trails which are easily traveled with very few hills. Two boat landings provide easy launching for all sizes of boats. Canoes can be rented at the office. Shore fishing is very accessible for visitors without watercraft.

Try hiking some of the nature trails along the Mississippi's backwaters or have a picnic near the river. Three miles of hiking trails course through majestic terrain. These ungroomed trails are available in winter for cross-country skiing. One of the trails may be found behind the park's nature center. Boating is a popular recreation at Merrick State Park. Two ramps give access to anglers, boaters and canoeists. Canoes may be rented from the park office.

The panoramic view of Fountain City along Buffalo County is highlighted by Eagle Bluff, a natural attraction which stands 550 feet above the river, the highest point on the Mississippi. Whether on scenic Highway 35, internationally recognized as "The Great River Road," or vacationing along the Mississippi River, visitors will experience a diversity of multi-seasonal recreational activities and enjoyable attractions. Local attractions are Elmer's Auto & Toy Museum, Fountain City Art Studio, Fountain City Historical Museum, Prairie Moon Sculpture/Gardens, River City Kayaks, Rock In The House, Upper & Lower Boat Landing..
