Located close to the Sugar River Trail, you'll find camping as it was intended, with drive-in or hike-in campsites of quiet solitude. A picnic area and playground. Nature trails lead to wildlife and the beauty of undisturbed woodland. The park also offers direct access to The Sugar River State Trail, a 23-mile, 265-acre, State Park trail surfaced with compressed limestone screenings, for bicycling, hiking, snowmobiling, rolling hills covered by a mix of forest and prairie, and, in some areas, hunting.


The park's terrain is comprised of a dense ridgeline and valleys where oak, hickory, elm, and black walnut dominate. The understory is a rich blend of botanical that include ferns, wildflowers and berry bushes. The undisturbed habitat of New Glarus Woods attracts marvelous bird life. Commonly seen year-round residents include cardinals, woodpeckers, nuthatches, and chickadees. Summer migrants include stunning visuals such as scarlet tanagers, orioles, vireos, red-headed woodpeckers, and several species of thrush. In late April, during the spring turkey season, disabled hunters are allowed to hunt wild turkey at New Glarus Woods by permit only.

Trails in New Glarus Woods State Park include: .4 miles Basswood Nature Trail, 4 miles Chattermark Trail, .2 miles Great Oak Trail, 4.2 miles Havenridge Nature Trail, .5 miles Walnut Trail, 1.6 miles Sugar River Trail Spur. The park has direct access to The Sugar River State Trail, a 23-mile, 265-acre, a 23-mile multi-use trail between New Glarus and Brodhead (part of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail), and the Swiss Historical Village, State Park trail surfaced with compressed limestone screenings, for bicycling, hiking, and snowmobiling. There is a connector trail to the Sugar River State Trail from New Glarus Woods. Also look New Glarus Woods State Park regular Nature Programs and Events.
