Northern Highland-American Legion (NHAL) State Forest
225,000 acres in Vilas, Oneida and Iron counties of beautiful northern Wisconsin forests and lakes offer camping, fishing, swimming, hunting, boating, canoeing, backpacking, biking, horseback riding, hunting and winter recreation such as cross-country ski, snowshoe and snowmobile on miles and miles of wooded trails, camping, birding. It has an elevation of 506 meters, or 1,660 feet. Wild and wilderness areas are avail-able for those seeking solitude.
Bearskin - Hiawatha State Trail - Vilas County
Tomorrow River State Trail
The trail goes through glacial terrain and farm country where it connects with the Green Circle Trail Just on the other side of Hoover Ave. Between Kennedy Ave. and Hoover Ave the trail traverses along a fence line next to a railroad track. Much of it along the Wisconsin and Plover rivers, comes within two blocks of the Tomorrow River State Trail. Open to bicyclists, hikers, joggers, and horseback riders year round and snowmobiles, skiers, and dog sledders during the winter.
Green Circle Trail
The Stevens Point area's locally-operated 24-mile nature trail circles through river shores, trees, plants, wild birds, and animals. Recall the history of the huge pinery, Indian camps, pioneer settlements, and lore of the Wisconsin and Plover rivers. Hike, touring bike, ski.
Bearskin - Hiawatha State Trail - Oneida County, WI
Two trails on a former rail bed between Minocqua and Tomahawk; designated a National Recreation Trail offering sights that include rolling hills, streams, and lakes. The Bearskin runs 18.3 miles south from Minocqua; the Hiawatha runs north from Tomahawk 6 miles. The trail winds through thick hardwood and pine forests, near several lakes and follows the winding course of the Bearskin Creek, which is home to our native trout species.
Rib Mountain State Park
This billion-year-old hill is one of the oldest geologic formations on earth. The top of the 60-foot observation tower is 700 feet and two observation decks above the surrounding plain and offers spectacular views. Downhill skiing and snowshoe trails are available in the winter.
Mountain-Bay State Trail
A county-operated 80.5-mile rail bed trail that passes through a wide variety of landscapes between the Wausau and Green Bay areas. Many bridges. Trail users must use streets and roads through Shawano. Hike, touring bike, snowmobile. It meanders through the countryside near several small rural communities, and along the way there is the opportunity to enjoy the land, flora and fauna. NO ATV'S ARE ALLOWED! Many bridges. Council Grounds State Park
Located along the beautiful Wisconsin River a short distance northwest of Merrill. Council Grounds is an all season park which provides facilities for picknicking, swimming, campground with modern rest rooms, swimming beach, whitewater paddling, playing golf, boating, canoeing, nature study, hiking, off road biking, camping, cross country skiing, shore fishing, waterskiing, shelter house and a physical fitness trail await visitors. Deer hunting is allowed in the fall by special permit only. The park’s deer management unit is 52A.
Whitefish Dunes State Park
This Door County park offers a combination of natural features rugged Lake Michigan shoreline, dense upland forest, shoreline on an interior lake, a winding creek with wetlands, and the highest sand dunes in Wisconsin within surrounding wetlands, and dense upland forest comprised of maple, limestone cliffs, beech and hemlock. The remains of eight successive prehistoric Native American villages are on the National Register of Historic Places as Whitefish Dunes-Bay View Site
